Sonic Movie 2 Metal Sonic

Sonic the Hedgehog has finally raced into theaters and is receiving positive fan reception. It has achieved an "A" on CinemaScore, showing plenty of audiences are enjoying the ride. One of the most acclaimed aspects is Jim Carrey's take on Dr.Robotnik/Eggman. In the film, Robotnik has an extreme love of machines and a distaste for people. Many probably thought the film might tease an appearance from Sonic's robotic doppelganger, Metal Sonic. Sadly, it did not happen. However, that doesn't mean the character can't pop up in a sequel.

Metal Sonic is a super Badnik created by Dr. Eggman. The character debuted in 1993's Sonic CD, as a major antagonist. Metal Sonic would become a fan favorite. He was featured in the Sonic OVA as a primary villain and made a number of appearances in the comics, including the current IDW run. Metal Sonic can easily match Sonic's speed. This makes the robot one of Sonic's most dangerous foes.

Although some might assume Metal Sonic is an emotionless robot, this couldn't be further from the truth. Metal Sonic develops an obsession with defeating Sonic, believing itself to be the one true Sonic. This is primarily seen in the events of Sonic Heroes. Metal Sonic gives himself a new, more sophisticated look in this game known as Neo Metal Sonic. Later, he transforms into a monster in order to fully defeat Sonic and friends. At the end of this boss fight, one can hear him shouting, "I'm the real Sonic!" Metal Sonic had betrayed Eggman, showing it had gained independence and full autonomy. All of this would make for some compelling cinema.

Interestingly, in Sonic the Hedgehog, Robotnik acquires a strand of Sonic's hair. He uses it to power up his robots, giving them the speed to keep up with the title character. This is a perfect setup for the introduction of Metal Sonic. By the end of the movie, Robotnik has clearly lost his sanity, so one can picture him building a robot mimicking his now-greatest obsession. Plus, Metal Sonic would just be cool to watch. The action scenes with it and Sonic could be outstanding.

A Sonic the Hedgehog sequel is not confirmed yet, but the film certainly sets one up with not one, but two important ending scenes. Sequels typically go bigger, so implementing Metal Sonic would be a great way to expand the audience. Besides the fact that the character is visually appealing, the storyline could adapt aspects of Sonic Heroes, where Metal Sonic develops a deep hatred for Sonic and even betrays Eggman. Who wouldn't want to watch that on the big screen?
